Of course watching the Spuds get munched was entertaining, and hopefully an open game when Chelsea travel to Old Trafford to tire everyone out. Anways, news is slowly dripping out regarding something happening in the boardroom. Nobody's really sure yet, but if anything is announced on the club's official website we can obviously expect it to come out sometime around April 13579. If anything interesting happens, I'll be sure to write up an article on Gunnersphere (@Gunnersphere on twitter) to cover it in more detail. I won't waste a blog post with it because I know it's not everyone's cup of tea.
Anyways, other news coming out as well. The stage is all but set for Carl Jenkinson to move to Arsenal this summer, as revealed by YoungGuns. Does this leave the door open for a Eboue to leave in the summer with Jenkinson, who can play across the back four, filling in as a young right back? I suppose the plan for next season will only become clear in pre-season.
In other news, Arsenal reserves beat Sunderland reserves 4-2, with Jeremie Aliadiere scoring and linking up well. Jens Lehmann made a lot of noise at the back, but being honest he doesn't look the most agile he's ever been. Let's just hope he doesn't have to come off the bench. Emmanuel Frimpong also made a long awaited come-back, following ligament damage. He's been speaking to the official site about how he's been waiting nine months to get back on the pitch, so it's no surprise that he was delighted to be back on the pitch. He's also been speaking about injuries and hopes he can get the rub of the green while he tries to break into the first-team. Neil Banfield spoke after the match on being pegged back twice, the quality we had and of course the return of Emmanuel Frimpong. You can find the highlights of the match here.

Show some f***ing passion!!!
I was reminiscing the other day with @AMMueller on twitter, after the disappointment of the Blackburn match we got to talking about the good old days where we won stuff and looked good. I watched a few videos afterwards and bloody hell we looked good. I mean really, we looked good; Henry, Bergkamp, Pires, Ljunberg, they could do anything they set their minds to. The amount of times they would clear a corner or win the ball in midfield and seconds later scored with a wonderful finsh through the keeper's legs or having chipped him from thirty yards out. It occured to me that this team isn't missing the latter, we know that we have the ability to score, pass, do whatever the hell we want. It's the pressing and winning the ball and actually giving a dogs bollock about the team and the club and the shirt that's the problem. Sometimes we show up and do it as well, like against Barcelona and Chelsea, but why don't we do it more often? Whereas that team would win 6-0 or 7-1, this one struggles to get three points. That's because that team had winners, players who would go out and put in a shift no matter who the opponents were. I wish this one did...

Apparently the boss locked the players in the dressing room after the Blackurn match and there was a bit of finger-pointing in the dressing room a la Tony Adams to Dennis Bergkamp hopefully. The boss has been speaking about finding out just where everything went wrong. Also the delightful news that Samir Nasri might not move to Italy. What a useless fact. Might as well say I'm not sitting on top of Mount Kenya as I type this.
Transfer tittle-tattle time then and there's a lot to get through. It looks like Gael Clichy really could be leaving this summer with Taye Taiwo and Leighton Baines touted as possible replacements after the Frenchman's contract negotiations have apparently stopped. I would love to have Baines in the squad if Clichy left. I'm told that Arsenal have been speaking to both the agent and also the father of Juan Manuel Mata for a possible move in the summer. Per Mertesacker will not be renewing his contract and will probably leave this summer according to a source high up in his current side, Werder Bremen. There's also news that Emmanuel Eboue could cross the North London divide. Meh. He hasn't played much but we don't have a young right back so his future at the club could depend on what happens in the summer.

Why?!?!
Arsenal's like a fine woman really. She'll tease you and tease you and just when you think you're getting somewhere she'll kick you in the bollocks. You're back at square one with sore testicles and wondering what you have to do to have a good night without being assaulted. Unfortunately, yesterday was one of those days.
While Crewe won 8-1; Arsenal could only manage a 0-0 draw at home to Blackburn. I don't even know where to begin. I won't bother telling you what happened, visit Arsenalist for highlights. Almunia was Almunia, caught a few corners, flapped a shot and came out for a punt he didn't get to. I think he's just waiting for the summer to be honest, just like the rest of us then. Bacary Sagna was Bactastic. Same old reliable Bac, no real worries, not the greatest attacking threat. Slid into a 50-50 early on, neither player came off particularly well. Clichy was a bit better, got down the left well, combined well with Arshavin as per usual and got in some decent crosses. Am I the only one who thinks his crossing is a lot better on his weaker foot, we certainly score more from those, e.g. Song at home to West Ham. The Squillaci-Koscielny partnership didn't really have that much to do, kept Santa Cruz quiet and were mostly solid barring the occasional punt upfield from Robinson.
Song picked up a knock followed by a booking but played the whole ninety. He lost a bit of mobility with the knock and maybe should have come off for a striker as Arsenal chased the win and the defence weren't exactly under the kosh. Jack Wilshere, same as always, tried to drive forwards, seemed to lack a little bit of spark, like most of the team. Missed a sitter around half an hour in. Samir Nasri played in the advanced role. Nasri looked to try and break through the Blackburn defence early on before a clash of heads. He came back on, bandaged up with a bump that could easily be mistaken for a baseball. He was shifted wide with the introduction of Cesc Fabregas before making way for Nicklas Bendtner. Bendtner did what he always does, provided a presence and mixed things up; he put in a few good crosses and tried to make some chances. Questions remain about why he played wide right rather than centrally though.
Theo Walcott started brightly, tormenting the left-back, although he faded as the game went on and service fell away, he certainly looked sharp. He came off for Marouane Chamakh who added a presence in the area and looked to get on the end of crosses, unfortunately he didn't really do that much. Andrei Arshavin started on the left, he completed 90 minutes twice for Russia in the international break but he looked sharp, running with the ball, making chances and taking them he was a bright spark in a dull first half. He started the second half sluggishly, not to be expected given the amount of football he's played and was brought off for Cesc Fabregas with half an hour left. Questions remain about why he came off instead of Song who offered less in attack, was on a booking and looked to have picked up a knock. Fabregas came on but looked rusty and not really fit enough to be playing Premier League football, certainly not fit enough to prove the difference in this match. Let's hope he can improve his match fitness before we travel to Blackpool. Robin Van Persie played well, not his best game ever and he didn't add to his Blackburn tally but he popped up in a lot of places and did his whole Van Persie thing.
So yeah, not that great but it remains to be seen what this means for our season, more on that in the coming days. After the match the boss spoke to the press, you can take a look at the transcript here or just watch the video if you're too lazy to read it. His interview with the BBC can be seen here and the interesting bit that Skysports picked up on was a 'lack of energy', is that a motivational problem; a problem following the international break? Maybe because we had so many players who were returning from injury. There was certainly a noticeable lack of sparkiness as the match wore on.
That's the match news done then, and rumours abound this week regarding Gael Clichy, with Bayern Munich and Italy likely destinations apparently. We know he only has one year on his contract and that Arsene could be tempted to cash in, but these kind of deals are usually resovled in the summer so I wouldn't be that worried. I would be worried if he was sold and nobody brought in. While Keiran Gibbs has the potential, he's not yet ready to be the first-choice left back and injuries seem to be a problem as well. One name that has been touted is Leighton Baines of Everton. Very much an attack-minded full back, he is second in the assist league since some time in 2009, with only Cesc Fabregas ahead of him. Not bad for a left-back, obviously the Premier League experience is a big plus as well. It has been reported that Everton have debts upto £45 million, although the summer will see how this one pans out.
Some other news then, Kyle Bartley is out for the rest of the season and is returning to Arsenal from Rangers where he impressed on loan; Arsenal have signed a young Swede and ex-Charlton boss Phil Parkinson is set to become Arsenal's scout in North East England due to his knowledge of the lower leagues. With the likes of Adam Johnson and Andy Carroll coming from the North East, it is hoped that Parkinson can catch a similar starlet.

Time to pray then.
With the second round of interlull matches coming up, it's time to pray to the god of football (Dennis Bergkamp) that we don't get about nineteen injuries. To check on the progress of our swashbuckling, wourld-touring players check here on the official site.
More soft news then, Arsenal Reserves lost 2-1 away to Wigan despite appearances from Jens Lehmann in goal and Jeremie Aliadiere in attack. Aliadiere looked decent as he looks to win himself a contract, combining well with Luke Freeman and getting a few half-chances. Jens Lehmann however looked woefully rusty, hopefully his match sharpness will pick up over the next few weeks but remembering that he's a 41-year old who was replaced in the team by Manuel Almunia, it's possible we're expecting too much from him. Aside from that, Arsenal Reserves have it all to do in the title race now.
In other news, Arsenal have launched a new 'elite' academy in Greece, Ignasi Miquel talks about his quick progress this season and Andrie Arshavin has won the March Goal of the Month award, not that there were many contenders.

WAJUK.
Apologies for the title, but this interlull has left me entirely bereft of inspiration. First things first; no I do not have an injury update following the interlull. Hopefully I will be able to give you one after the second round of games, at the moment I know of no serious injuries; Conor Henderson took a knock last week, but he seems to be fine now.
Onto random news then, Jens Lehmann thinks that his 'psychological warfare' with Arsene Wenger pushed him to achieve. Psychological warfare? Really? Also, Brazil beat Scotland 2-0 yesterday in a match at the Emirates, highly rated youngster Neymar grabbing a brace. Pedro Bothelo scored a decent goal for Cartegena which can be seen here. It's the second one.
Reserves and youth and stuff then, Steve Bould has been saying that poor results doesn't mean there's no potential in the side. As I've said before these U-18s are very young for their age group (i.e. U-17s) and that plays a major part in youth matches. Daniel Boateng reckons that even though we were knocked out of the FA Youth Cup by Chelsea, a Reserve league win would make up for the disappointment. Finally, the Reserves are in action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Wigan. Their last match was a 2-1 win over Liverpool in which Luke Freeman scored a brace and you can be sure to check out a match compilation here thanks to CWDGunnereserves.
The Cesc Fabergas saga is kicking off early this year. Barcelona look set to miss out on the captain as they can't afford him, leaving him set to stay at the club next season. It's still early doors and I wouldn't trust those arrogant oafs who show such a large lack of humility that they could well compete with John Terry in the 'UEFA lack of humility awards'. 'Our relationship with Arsenal is not good at the moment'; that's what usually happens when you try and buy a clubs captain with underhand slimy tactics and you can't even afford him anyway. Imbeciles.
The good old fashioned club vs. country row has kicked off again, it turns out that the FA want to do a 'Theo' and take a member of the senior England starting XI and play him in the U-21s. A step down? I think so. This means that Jack won't have a proper summer to relax until 2013? He's naturally expressed his desire to play this summer, as you would expect. Apart from the fact that he would always play football given the chance, especially for his country; he can't really say no can he?
Finally, both Arsene Wenger and Samir Nasri are not appealing their bans from UEFA and will get one match bans, with Wenger being fined 10000 euros for expressing his opinion. No big loss really, as I said in an earlier post, you wouldn't expect UEFA to admit to a mistake.

We're only half-way through?!?
So it's illegal to drive bare-foot in the UK, but perfectly legal for interlulls to exist? What's the world coming to? Anyways, Aaron Ramsey is the new Wales captain as we already know, and here he is talking to the press. Obviously the battle between himself and Jack Wilshere could well be pivotal in the clash this weekend, let's hope they both score fifty-eight goals each and come back safely.
Thomas Vermaelen has been targeting his comeback and reckons that waiting until next season and getting a full pre-season under his belt will do him the world of good. He's also been speaking about his time on the sidelines, insisting that mentally and tactically he has improved his game, even if he hasn't been on the training pitch.

Bacary Sagna has been speaking to the press about rough tackling, using Paul Scholes' tackling at Old Trafford as an example. If you wait until a major incident before changing the legislation then you've clearly left it too late.

Interlull? Blueurgh!
Righto then. Sorry about the lack of a blog yesterday, but it's an interlull so I was busy staring at a cloud for amusement. A bit more news today though, let's keep it brief. Nicklas Bendtner has picked up a minor knock with Denmark in training, it doesn't look that serious and he hasn't been sent home so he could well be fine for this weekend. Shame. Johan Djourou could also be back in three to four weeks as he looks set to not need surgery.
This weekend, Aaron Ramsey is set to get the armband for Wales. It seems Wales look to the future when picking their captains, rather than England's approach of picking the most cretinous individual possible. Anyways, congratulations to Rambo obviously, let's hope he can fill his boots and kick on from here. A bit of transfer news flying around as papers look to fill up the interlull, the Mail reckon that we're set to battle with Bayern Munich for Gary Cahill. Admittedly a good replacement for Squillaci, but Bartley looks likely to get a few games next season. Still, extra depth wouldn't go amiss...
Another piece in the Mail about young Charlton defender Carl Jenkinson who will be available for a free in the summer; YoungGuns clarifies the situation here. The Mirror reckons that the Premier League big guns are after Connor Wickham, heard that one before? Also, the usual club vs. country debate, with the U-21 European Championships this summer, Stuart Pearce is looking at the possibility of calling up players from the senior side, with the likes of Jack Wilshere being looked at.
Aside from that, stuff from the official site including a new contract for young striker Luke Freeman, he's certainly got Premiership potential so let's hope he goes far. Jack Wilshere has been chatting about how Twitter has helped him understand the fans and James Shea has spoken about his eight day loan at Southampton.

This weekend, Aaron Ramsey is set to get the armband for Wales. It seems Wales look to the future when picking their captains, rather than England's approach of picking the most cretinous individual possible. Anyways, congratulations to Rambo obviously, let's hope he can fill his boots and kick on from here. A bit of transfer news flying around as papers look to fill up the interlull, the Mail reckon that we're set to battle with Bayern Munich for Gary Cahill. Admittedly a good replacement for Squillaci, but Bartley looks likely to get a few games next season. Still, extra depth wouldn't go amiss...
Another piece in the Mail about young Charlton defender Carl Jenkinson who will be available for a free in the summer; YoungGuns clarifies the situation here. The Mirror reckons that the Premier League big guns are after Connor Wickham, heard that one before? Also, the usual club vs. country debate, with the U-21 European Championships this summer, Stuart Pearce is looking at the possibility of calling up players from the senior side, with the likes of Jack Wilshere being looked at.

Laurent Koscielny, he gets the job done.
Congratulations are in order for Laurent Koscielny, who left training with the French national team after just twenty minutes as his girlfriend went into labour. Get in Kos!
So, boring Interlull news: Theirry Henry is now captain for New York Red Bulls as they kick off the season with a win. News on the UEFA charge against Wenger and Nasri as well, the club are still debating whether or not to appeal. I do wonder just how many times UEFA rescind a punishment, admitting they're wrong. Not very often I bet.
Aaron Ramsey has been talking about how it was tough to sit on the sidelines, not being able to play football. As Arsene Wenger said, it's hard mentally for an injured footballer; they feel like they are useless, especially if like Rambo they're out for nine months. The signs so far look promising, hopefully a good performance for Wales this weekend will keep his comeback on the rails.
Robin Van Persie has been saying, rightly so, that the title is in our hands. Obviously this is true, win all our matches and bang; silverware. I have no doubt that the first XI are raring to take on the big boys, but what about the second-string? Our weakness this season has been when fringe players come in and just coast.
As Benik Afobe's time at Huddersfield Town is drawing to a close with the end of the season, he's been looking ahead to the future following his impressive loan spell to a career wearing the red and white of the Arsenal. He's also been speaking about how his loan spell has helped him in terms of learning from experienced pros. Let's hope he kicks on from here, with either a cup run next season or a loan spell in a higher division.
Also, another video courtesy of CescyFabGooner; this time an interview with Wojcech Szczesny talking about quite a few things, such as the frustration of having to watch on from the sidelines and also the return of Jens Lehmann. It's been revealed that despite his injury, the young Pole is still training and trying to improve his distribution. What a legend.
Finally a piece in the Mail about Gael Clichy. They reckon he's set to leave in the summer with Emilio Izaguirre set to come in from Celtic. I'm told he was close to leaving last season, and with contract talks on hold until the summer there's talk of restlessness. It could happen, although I'm not sure about whether Gibbs is really ready. He has the potential to be good, but he still has slip-ups every now and then. I wouldn't be surprised if Clichy were to get a new contract in the summer, that's what the club are looking for, it all depends on what Clichy wants I suppose.

The best interlull ever?
Now like most Arsenal fans, I don't particularly like interlulls. This one however, could be perfectly timed. If it gives the likes of Fabregas, Song and Walcott the time to get fit and Lehmann the chance to teach Almunia a thing or two then it's only a good thing. There's even talk that Johan Djourou is doing better than expected and may return ahead of schedule. One can always hope... Right now, we'll have to hope that none of our players go away and come back in two/three/[insert cynically high number here] pieces. To take a look at just who is on international duty, here's the list from the official site.
Speaking of internationals, Fabio Capello has had a thing or two to say about Jack Wilshere, suggesting that he could very much be in the first XI now. Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey could well face each other in the engine room when England and Wales clash this weekend, a test that Aaron Ramsey is looking forward to. If he does well, it could well be a measure of how well he's coming on. Speaking about Aaron Ramsey, Arsene Wenger has been speaking about how games like West Brom last weekend are just what the Welshman needs to get his match sharpness back. Aaron Ramsey also spoke to the press after the match, talking about how our character shows in performances like our come-back against West Brom. Wenger has also been speaking on the subject of character, saying that we have great character in our side, once we manage to shake off nerves which inhibit our play.
So two clips for you; the first is Jack Wilshere talking about Rambo's return, the character we showed and the title race, the second is Arsene Wenger talking about the title race, nerves on our part and also a shout-out to the away fans. Enjoy.
As expected, this will be a long two weeks for Manuel Almunia, who was quick to cool suggestions of a fall-out with Jens Lehmann; but Arsene Wenger has eased speculation that the Spaniard would fall behind Lehmann in the pecking order. It does seem that Lehmann would not yet be fit enough, but it looks like he is set to play part in reserve fixtures in order to build up his match fitness.
So other news wise, Wenger has been speaking about how consistency wins titles, I wish we would show it then... Also, the Mirror reckon that United are now set to beat us to the signing of Oxlade-Chamberlain from Southampton. I don't know what's changed there, but if anything happens, it'll be in the summer. Good fightback, shame about the rest...
I have to say that at 2-0 down, the Arsenal twittersphere wasn't a nice place to be. No surprises there then. The important part is we made it to the international break alive and in one(ish) piece with no massive disaster unfolding.
So in case you didn't know, we only managed a point in our recent trip to the Midlands. Two ridiculous goals conceded; the first was terrible defending from a corner, the second was an error from the decision-making of Manuel Almunia. (There's a shocker...) If you haven't already seen the highlights then be sure to take a look on Arsenalist.
Anyways, let's take a looksy shall we. Manuel Almunia in goal; where to begin? Typical Almunia really. Alan Davies summed him up quite nicely in a podcast a few weeks ago. When he's undep pressure and shot-stopping is what's needed he's your man. Look at Barcelona this season, Barcelona at the Grove the season before, United away a few seasons ago in the CL. It's decision-making that's his weakness and he proved it today. Having said that, he is our third (or arguably fourth) choice goal-keeper. Would he be getting this much stick if he were Rhys Taylor playing for Chelsea, Gunnar Nielsen for Man City or Ben Amos for United? I think not. Having said that, any analasis of his performance is pretty much impossible following the almighty hash-up. He came for and caught a corner, that's about all I remember. I have no idea what he was doing running out there though, no idea at all. Squillaci had it under control, he was goal-side of a bouncing ball. Why Almunia thought a stroll out of his area was needed I have no idea. Then he got there... and stopped! He just stood still and then pushed Squillaci.
The defence were... quiet. The Ksocielny - Squillaci partnership still looks shaky. To blame Squillaci for the goal is just scape-goating; Vermaelen wouldn't be blamed if he were in that position as Squillaci was ready to head it back tothe safety of Manuel Almunia. Bacary Sagna didn't have the greatest day at the office. He wasn't always in line and quite a few West Brom attacks did come down our right. Gael Clichy was, imperious? He didn't look that shaky at the back, combined really well with Arshavin and got a lot of sexy crosses into the box, proper good ones not just Arsenal ones. Shame they weren't converted.
Denilson. Came off at half-time for Chamakh. Is that because the boss wanted goals or Denilson was sh*te? Wenger rarely brings players off at half-time, could this finally be the end of Denilson getting a million chances ahead of his peers? Wilshere, I might as well copy and paste the same stuff for Wilshere every match, kept on running, kept on driving from midfield, concentrated and did his job well. Showed signs of frustration at times, but then with the manner we conceded the goals; who wouldn't? Aaron Ramsey played in the advanced role but looked to lack sharpness. A bit of rustiness isn't surprising but he lost his man to concede the first goal (admittedly a lot of players lost their men though) and had a chance to score from about 5 yards out but couldn't put it past Carson. While sharpness will come with time, it's encouraging that Ramsey hasn't had any of the set-backs we've seen after the Diaby and Eduardo injuries. Came off for Bendtner after an hour as we chased goals and reverted to a kind of 4-4-2/4-3-3/4-5-1 hybrid.
Our attack started with Arshavin -Van Persie - Nasri. Arshavin had one of those games where he's quiet, working well with Clichy on the left and then all of a sudden he explodes, lashing a shot across the keeper into the top corner and some really good work down the left to get a cross in despite the attention of two defenders which led to the second goal. Van Persie was decent, a bit under-par maybe. Headed against the bar after a lethargic start but woke up and was on his toes to score the second goal before Meite could clear. Chamakh came on for Denilson and looked industrious. Still lacking in goals, but he combined well, releasing Arshavin for the first and also offered a more physical presence. Bendtner obviously also offered a more physical presence as well, knocked the ball back to Van Persie for the second goal from Arshavin's cross and generally huffed and puffed.
Anyways, the boss spoke to the press after the match saying that he was proud of the spirit and fightback, rightly so. That doesn't the disguise the fact that we were below-par though and performances like that don't win titles.
It seems the bad news just keeps on coming as well as Arsenal U-18s were beaten 3-0 by Watford. Although as I have said previously, they shouldn't be compared to the likes of Wilshere, JET etc. because they're a lot younger than that team was when it did the U-18 double.

Pre-match and all that jazz.
So, it seems like ages since Arsenal last played, only the second midweek since December where we haven't had a match. Anyways, Arsene Wenger's pre-match press conference was today and we got clarification on a number of things. News on Jens Lehmann, who is now officially an Arsenal player, again. Le boss has been speaking about how only Arsenal would have been able to entice Jens Lehmann to dust off his gloves and get in between the sticks. Of course we're all hoping that he isn't actually forced to play but as Arsenal fans, we know that stranger things have happened. As many of you will know, the relationship between Almunia and Lehmann has traditionally been fractious at best, but with the German making all the right sounds in recent days Arsene Wenger is convinced that Lehmann will be able to push Almunia (not literally) to perform and will be supporting him.
Other news now, not of the nice variety as Thomas Vermaelen has been ruled out for what looks to be the rest of the season with his niggly tendons. Johan Djourou could yet feature in this campaign, as he is set to spend at least six weeks on the sidelines. I don't know whether playing a half-fit centre-back is really that good an idea though, so it's yet to be seen just how much of a part he'll play. In other news, we travel to West Brom without Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott, Alex Song, About Diaby and of course not that many goalkeepers either. Most of those are expected to be back after the international break.
The boss spoke on a number of other topics. Sir Alex Ferguson's touchline ban came up, although he will be back on the bench for the match at the Emirates as United have requested for the ban to start tomorrow. A lack of leadership also came up, with Wenger arguing that it is a problem, but equally that pure leadership doesn't win you games.
In other news, the Reserves overcame Liverpool Reserves at Underhill last night, winning the match 2-1. Luke Freeman fired a rocket into the top corner to open the scoring before Rhys Murphy hit the post with a casual penalty. It proved costly as Liverpool looked to have equalised in the 88th minute, before Freeman scored in injury time to once again give Arsenal Reserves the 3 points. At least the women are decent...
Not only are they better than the men in the FA cup, they're doing better in Europe as well. The first leg of their quarter-final tie is tomorrow afternoon and you can read the official preview here and get squad news from LadyArse's blog here.
In breaking news, the FA has found their cojones today, with SAF looking at a five game ban as things stand. If he doesn't appeal, he could well miss the clash at the Emirates later in the season, forced to watch from the stand.
Anyways, in other news the DailyMail told us yesterday that Blackburn were set to bid £15million for Nicklas Bendtner, today they reckon that he'll hold out for a move to Germany. Fair play to him, I'll wait until I hear it from another source though, this could just be agents looking around for offers. Jens Lehmann's name has been popping up, unsurprisingly, and it looks like he's been saying something sensible and conducive to not fighting with teammates. I've already expressed my views on Lehmann, although it is still a contentious point. Be sure to comment if you've got an opinion on his signing.
Some other news which is even more contentious, the club are raising ticket prices at the Ems from next season for Club Levet at least. A lot of people not happy that this money is going towards the wages of Diaby's and Denilson's. Not my opinion, but is a rise in ticket prices acceptable given some of our performances this season?
Anyways, it looks like a bit of a youth day on the main site today, with an article about Oguzhan Ozyakup; Rhys Murphy talking about a loan move, Kyle Ebecilio about being spotted by and fitting in at Arsenal and also Ignasi Miquel about how hard work is the best way to get your chance.

Meh.
More than three days without a match? How boring. Oh well. Time for a news round. Still no official word on Lehmann, but I'm told that his deal is being finalised and it will last from between six weeks and until the end of the season. In other news on a rather Djourou-esque kind of theme, the Swiss FA have been testing and probing Johan Djourou all day long and reckon he'll be fit by the end of March. The club have been quick to refute this though, saying that we don't know how long he'll be out for until he sees a specialist on Thursday. Watch this space, it'll be interesting to see how this one develops.
That's all the important stuff, in other news the Daily Mail 'understands' that Blackburn are set to offer £15 million for Nicklas Bendtner in the summer. What are your thoughts on this one? He's not the best finisher or even the best trainer the club has ever seen; but he does seem to score goals every now and then, e.g. the end of last season. Also, Fabio Capello has been heaping even more praise on Jack Wilshere as the English press look to do their best of making a massive pedestal for him to fall from. After all, the larger the fall; the more papers are sold. Anyways, the latest news is that at 19 years of age, Jack is being lined up as an England captain of the future. There's nothing I would like to see more than Jack wearing the armband for England, but this is ridiculous.
Also, theToryTelegraph talking about Theo Walcott not coming back until after the international break. No big surprise, I'd rather he was building up his fitness than being rushed into the England setup to be honest. Also, Pedro Bothelo managed to grab a goal and an assist this weekend for Cartagena, check out the highlights here. Miquel looks set to get an oppurtunity in the run-in if we're stuck with just Koscielny and Squillaci, while there's rumours that Rangers want Kyle Bartley to stay for another season. Nice experience for him, but I'd rather see him come back and challenge Squillaci.

A whole week off?
One game in three weeks, this could very well be boring, still onwards unto the breach and all that. I suppose the first bit of business should be an article I had published on the Gunnersphere site about injuries to our defence and 'keepers and just how much Wenger is culpable for a lack of depth. Be sure to take a look.
Anyways, onto other news and there has been quite a lot of rumour talking about Jens Lehmann joining the club on a short term deal seeing as he's already here training to get his coaching badges. I certainly wouldn't mind, his winning mentality would certainly be welcome;but we're yet to see anything official on this front *UPDATE: From what I'm told, Lehmann's deal has been finalised and he will be in the squad to face West Brom*. Former Gunner Perry Groves has been talking to talkshitesport about how the second string really has to be fired up. I couldn't agree more, there's been a distinct gulf between the first and second XI's this season; and most of that is down to a lack of desire. Emmanuel Petit has this to say as well, bit weird though, not really sure what to make of it, though it is in the Sun and all that...
Aaron Ramsey has been speaking about how he is glad to be back playing for Arsenal, as can be seen in this interview once again provided by CescyFabGooner.

I'm getting a bit tired of this now.
You know, sometimes I wish Arsenal would win on the big stage, just so I could do a bit happy blog rather than exactly the same one I did for Barca and Birmingham. What can you stay, we started well, had loads of possession and United scored. We opened up and United scored on the counter. That's your match report right there really. We had chances and could have been a bit more clinical, but Van Der Sar's fully dererved Man of the Match tells a story of it's own, although he was never forced into any wonder saves; he was solid and it cannot be doubted that he made life a lot easier for United.
That's not to say that Almunia was bad for us; he wasn't really at fault for the goals, except maybe he could have parried the shot for the first one in a different direction; but that really would be nit-picking. Bacary Sagna was great going forward, putting in quite a few really good crosses; his inconsistent crossing has often been his downfall, let's hope his recent improvement carries on. Howver, he was a bit shaky defensively, let's hope a better attacking Sagna doesn't lead to a worse defending Sagna; otherwise we'll get and Eboue. On the other side, Gibbs looked shaky; obviously Old Trafford isn't the easiest place to go but he didn't quite look up to speed, getting muscled off the ball in the early stages. He improved as the match went on, but was quiet at best.
Koscielny was good going forward, carrying the ball out of defence, making passes and could have even scored to make it 1-1 but for Van Der Sar in the United goal. He did look a little shaky at the back, sometimes lagging behind the movement of Hernandez and Rooney. Johan Djourou was solid at the back as always, rarely letting Hernandez or Rooney get the better of him. That injury looked worrying though, six minutes, stretcher, neck brace, oxygen mask. Wenger confimed after the match that it's a dislocated shoulder and he's out for the rest of the season. Such a shame, to prove how important he is for us, we haven't lost a league game this season with him in the line-up. The record goes further back than that as well.
Denilson was caught jogging for the United counter-attacks once again. I know it's his style to pass sideways and backwards, but when we're 2-0 down, you have to be a bit more adventurous really. Diaby put in the effort, but he just slows down our attacks way too much, too one-dimensional and gives away possession way too much. He doesn't play well in the advanced role, he can't make his trademark runs. Jack Wilshere. Legend.
Nasri looked bright, had a few efforts saved by Van Der Sar and looked creative; as did Robin Van Persie, didn't get much service but dropped deep to help out and also looked creative, if not as sharp as we would hope. Hopefully the one week break will give him time to recover. Andrei Arshavin had a few good chances earlier, then must have been abducted because aside from a few passes he wasn't really around that much.
Chamakh came on for Denilson with half an hour left and was decent, running around, pressurising and having shots saved, he;s not doing too badly as an impact sub, if only he could start scoring again. Rosicky came on for Arshavin, had a long-range effort saved and was normal Rosicky. The best thing to happen yesterday, Aaron Ramsey is officially back, coming on for Abou Diaby and immediately made a massive difference, running with drive and determination, looking to set people running. Let's hope he starts at West Brom ahead of the Chcukle Brothers.
So anyways, the boss spoke to the press afterwards about Djourou's injury and also our woeful finishing amongst other things. Check it out here, or watch the video below.

United tomorrow, the perfect tonic?
Righto then, let's kick off then shall we?
I always say this, but there really isn't that much to talk about today, even with a trip to Old Trafford kicking off in under twenty-four hours. More news will probably come out this evening and tomorrow morning but for now we only have a few scraps to feed off. I'm drawing a line under the Barcelona match and any comments from there, so it's time to look ahead to United this weekend. As has been said by a few sources over the last few days, Arsene is looking for a boost in confidence from the tie this weekend. Not only does it give us a real chance of returning to Wembley this season if we can get past them, it could also prove decisive in the title race in terms of confidence and self-belief.
In terms of team news, Manuel Almunia will feature in goal with James Shea on the bench. News on Wojcech Szczesny's injury is that he will be out for around four to six weeks after consulting a specialist. We should see pretty much the same back four as has been featuring for the majority of the season, but Alex Song won't be fit in time and Cesc Fabregas has no chance after picking up a slight strain against Barcelona. We could see Diaby, Denilson or both alongside Wilshere, or the possibility of Nasri in the centre with Arshavin and Rosicky on the flanks, leaving probably Robin Van Persie up front after passing a fitness test earlier in the week with Bendtner and Chamakh on the bench.
More of a preview tomorrow... probably. Well who knows, one thing we do know is that Wenger spoke to the press pre-match and his conference and interview with Arsenal.com are here, exclusively from CescyFabGooner's channel on YouTube.

Bit of a lull at the moment.
Not that there's not much news that is. There's still shed-loads of fallout from the loss in midweek and lets start with everyone's favourite bit, hating on the ref. Johan Djourou has joined in, rightly so of course, and there's been a bit of a verbal bust-up with regards to Arsene Wenger's charge from UEFA. The boos is adamant that he's done nothing wrong and will be contesting the charge of improper conduct, with damning criticism in his press-conference of the idea that he has done something wrong when it's the referee who has not only made the massive mistake but also defended it.
Speaking of the boss, he's been talking about this weekends match at Old Trafford and is looking for a boost in confidence; while United look to be gaffer-taped together at the moment, we're low on confidence and going from fighting on four fronts to one in such a short period of time would pretty much destroy the teams confidence for most of the season in all honesty. He's also been talking about Manuel Almunia, he hasn't made a fuss about being held against his will like we often hear from proessionals, he's sitting around, taking his chances and willing to see out his contract. Good lad. On the 'keeper front, not much more news on the Szczesny injury really and also the possibility of an emergency loan to bring in cover. Manuel Almunia is another who appeared in the press after the Barca defeat, asking whether everyone was really giving their all for the team.
Onwards and upwards then, Cesc looks set to miss out the United tie after playing on with a knock against Barcelona. Robin Van Persie looks set to feature after surviving Eric Abidal's neck-warming techniques unscathed. SAF also admits that he's scared of Arsenal. Rightly so. In other news, Bacary Sagna has been talking about how failing to win a trophy this season would be a real disappointment, Jack Wilshere on how the only way to respond when you're knocked down is to stand up even stronger and bite of everyone's hands so they can never knock you down again.
Also, we're apparently interested in a young midfielder at Sporting Gijon; more rubbish from the Metro; the same old story about Mexes from Roma and also more interest in Blaise Matuidi apparently.
Finally, the Reserves lost to an experienced Newcastle side as they travelled to St. James' Park yesterday, they fought back from 1-0 to square the score with Josh Rees turning in Thomas Cruises' cross. Despite concerted pressure on the Newcastle goal Arsenal couldn't find a way through and conceded from a headed attempt at the death. Sean McDermott deputied in goal for James Shea who is set to feature on the bench at Old Trafford and managed to save a lacklustre penalty eddort early on. Once again, a centre-back featured as a right back with Hajrovic out of position as Arsenal continue their search for a young full-back. Ones to watch were Ignasi Miquel, the captain returning to the side. Also young left-back Thomas Cruise, midfielder Conor Henderson and striker Luke Freeman. However, reports of a Thomas Vermaelen set-back seem to be true as he didn't feature in the squad.

Well that was a disappointment...
After all the hype, the hoping and praying that we would finally be able to step it up on the big stage it just didn't happen. You could say we didn't take our chances and that on a different day we could have got the result we wanted; but enough about Crewe's loss to Macclesfield though, let's talk about Arsenal.
Well, that was... never mind. The first thing, that was never a red card for Van Persie. Never. Forget inexplicable, it's indefensible. The simple fact of the matter is that we were winning the tie before Van Persie got sent off for the stupidest reason ever; and we know that it's pretty much impossible for a team to shut out Barcelona at the Nou Camp with ten men, especially with no Song or Vermaelen.
Bad news for Wojcech Szczesny as he injured his finger, possibly ruling himself out for the rest of the season. Only Arsenal could lose their top two keepers for the run-in for the rest of the season. Szczesny went off after about twenty minutes, with Almunia coming on to replace him. In fairness, it was the perfect response from Almunia who seems to step it up in the big games. Barcelona came again and again but Almunia did his best to keep the scoreline decent; and probably succeeded. What happens in the logr-un who knows, Wenger will probably want experience on the bench, YoungGuns talks about the possibilities here. Djourou and Koscielny were rock-solid in defence, even with the latter giving away a penalty I have to say they put in a real shift and played well. Clichy and Sagna were also decent, Clichy doing his best to contain Messi and Alves on the over-lap while Sagna did well to mark a quiet David Villa. Sagna has also been talking to the press here.
Jack Wilshere was, as always, incredible. Is there ever a match where he doesn't look like he is willing to die for the club to get the win? Great dedication as always, looked to drive on with the ball on the rare occasions where we had possession. Certainly learning a lot, let's hope he can get over these type of results quickly and move on. Abou Diaby was decent I suppose, we didn't really have enough of the ball to bring his running from deep into play and his physical presence didn't really do that much to help as the Barca midfield just seemed a bit to fast for him. A real crossroads for him, we know he has ability but he needs to start delivering consistently if he wants to be more than just a bit-part player. Then there's Cesc Fabregas. Not fully fit, as shown as he struggled to make an impact, gave away possession with a ridiculous backheel to gift Barcelona's first goal and was eventually hauled off for Nicklas Bendtner as we looked to score an away goal to take us through. Poor, let's hope he is fit for the weekend. As for Bendtner, once again we couldn't really get the ball to him, had a chance to put us in the driving seat again, but hard to score a chance like that with what was probably his first touch of the ball.
In attack, Van Persie was equally unfit, couldn't make an impact as the ball never really got up to him and he eventually got sent off, the first yellow deserved as his frustration brought out the petulent side in him. The second yellow, I won't go into that one for fear of using crude language in my blog. That ref though, what a tosser. Nasri was decent, looked to drive on the counter like Wilshere, won the corner that got our goal and was as I said decent. Rosicky was picked because for his willing ness to track back, which he did. Rightly so, one of the biggest games that will happen in world football this season, and they get an idiot to ref it. A footballing feast in store for us?
It's the big one this evening, as we all know my hometown team Crewe Alexandra will be taking on local rivals Macclesfield Town in the South Cheshire derby; but perhaps just as importantly it's the second leg of our champions league tie against Barcelona. Where to begin?
I suppose team news would be the best place to start with uncertainty in Barcelona's defence and our attack. With Pique suspended and Puyol set to miss out as well, it looks like Busquets and Abidal are set to deputise in central defence, although both are good players, they're not Puyol and Pique. As excpected Maxwell should feature at left-back and Mascherano as the holding midfielder. On to the good team now, Szczesny should feature in goal, with the Clichy-Djourou-Koscielny-Sagna defence basically first choice. Hopefully Koscielny has got the Wembley horrors out of his system and will be more than ready for Barcelona. In midfield Fabregas looks set to feature, declaring himself ready not only physically, but mentally as well.
Alongside him, we can obviously expect to see Jack Wilshere in his usual role, alongside either Diaby or Denilson. This is the first contentious point. Diaby offers a greater threat and is able to surge forward with his runs from deep, but he's also more of a liability as Denilson usually plays the safer pass and slots into the defence better. I think Denilson will get the nod to fill in for Song here, but I could easily be wrong. In attack, we can obviously expect to see Nasri and Arshavin on the flanks. Up front is a real tricky one. We know that Robin Van Persie's return is a major boost for the club, as reiterated by the captain, but is he really fit enough to start?
If so then problem solved, if not then it's a toss-up between Marouane Chamakh and Nicklas Bendtner. Take your pick again really; Bendtner is a more varied player and definitely looks to have more goals about him, but Chamakh holds up play and links up better than Bendtner, important if we look to play on the counter. I'll probably go out on a limb and say the Great Dane will start, but once again I wouldn't put money on it. We're yet to see who will be trimmed from the 19-man squad. Van Persie will be included provided he passes his fitness test which I've been led to believe he has. Someone along the lines of Rosicky or Gibbs will probably find themselves axed then.
